The King of Engines ( KOE ) Tournament

Dear chess friends!

The Reason to create rules for anything is to ensure fairness and order. And this is also effort make our tournament "self-cleaning" and fairness to all engines available in chess jungle.

Most probably this rules will make not only "happy smile" specially to those friends who are in KOE2007 table 8-13.   

On the other hand fact is that that qualifying tournament will be not so tough. What engines will be left for that tournament and how many? It must be except first 7! And first 6 will be qualified!

So please don't be in panic even if you are the 13th. Those players 8-13 will have advantage to select new engine or keep original. Players from outside jungle will be able to select engine later when all 8-13 players have choice done.

We believe you all friends will understand our effort.

please read carefully:

• Players for KOE will be not selected as was in 2006 and 2007. First 7 engines(players) in final table KOE 2007 have right to play in KOE 2008 with the same engine. Changing engine is not allowed.
• Next 6 engines(players) in final table KOE 2007 have right to play with the same engine or with any different engine than those 7 "core" engines qualifying tournament. This tournament will be organized by KOE TDs Alex/Miro. This tournament will be announced in jungle (chessbase server) and entry will be free for everyone. Time control will be 60+0. New player will be allowed to play qualifying tournament with engine which must be different than those 7 engines from previous KOE and from those already registered in qualifying tournament. First 6 placed engines(players) of  this tournament will get right to play next KOE together with 7 engines(players) from previous KOE. That means 13 players every year.
• A player who leaves the qualification tournament will be added to a blacklist, as leaving the tournament, if qualification is impossible, is a sign of no respect towards the whole tournament, and we wont respect this habit.
• If any player for any reason can't continue in KOE tournament TD will find player who will replace that player.
• In KOE if game can't be played on schedule the game must be played in advance. One round per week. If player will not play game on schedule or in advance TD may replace this player. KOE 2008 will start Dec. 1, 2007. Qualifying tournament will be scheduled in November 2007.
• Hardware is going to be limited for 2008 to max octa = max 8 cpu/cores. Any upgrade up to 8 cpu/core during tournament is allowed.
• In KOE is allowed to play any version of chess program with which player is registered. It means for example player with Deep Fritz may use any older or newest engine of Fritz family, single or smp version. Switching the engine (except in engine family) during the tournament isn’t allowed.
• In KOE tournament or in qualifying tournament engine(player) must send evaluation of position. If engine does not allow that can’t be registered for KOE.
• Golden Rule: One beer per move, but operator has to take care of being able to operate the game and his engine ;-)). NO VODKA!!

Old rules from last year:

• Timescale 180+0min per color, no increment
• Two rounds vs each other with one games and black and white
• One game per week
• No engine twice (for example no rybka single and rybka mp)
• Only one nickname allowed that has to play all games
• 13 engines
• unrated games to be able to choose the colour
• the win should be clear (+- 5), so don’t give up too early
• fair play
• if any kind of failure, the game has to be resumed where it was interrupted
• have fun!

KOE 2007 has scheduled last round 21-27 May 2007. Please all Players from KOE 2007:

• First 7 send please email to miroloj@sympatico.ca whether or not you want to play in KOE 2008. (Players with engines first 7 in final table KOE 2007 have right to play KOE 2008 without qualifying). If player who was in first 7 wants to switch engine – he will have to play qualifying tournament. In this case TD will find operator for abandoned engine. If we don’t receive email with confirmation with will to play in KOE 2008 till June 10, TD will find replacement.
• Players/engines 8-13 in final table KOE 2007 send please email to miroloj@sympatico.ca whether or not you want to play qualifying tournament (be played in November 2007). Players 8-13 have right to play the same engine used in KOE 2007 or they may switch engine but rules are:
  1. 8^th in table can keep his engine or select any engine different from first 7 in table and different from those 9-13(If player 9-13 wants to use his engine) and those already registered for qualifying tournament. Player 8^th must send email with his will to play qualifying tournament and selected engine till June 10 to ensure registration for qualifying tournament. We send email to all 13 KOE 2007 players with update when new engine registered. Another players from Jungle will get chance to select engine when all players 8-13 set.
  2. 9^th in table can keep his engine or select any engine different from first 7 in table and different from those 10-13(If player 10-13 wants to use his engine) and those already registered for qualifying tournament. Player 9^th must send email with his will to play qualifying tournament and selected engine till June 20 to ensure registration for qualifying tournament. We send email to all 13 KOE 2007 players with update when new engine registered. Another players from Jungle will get chance to select engine when all players 8-13 set.
  3. 10^th in table can keep his engine or select any engine different from first 7 in table and different from those 11-13(If player 11-13 wants to use his engine) and those already registered for qualifying tournament. Player 10^th must send email with his will to play qualifying tournament and selected engine till June 30 to ensure registration for qualifying tournament. We send email to all 13 KOE 2007 players with update when new engine registered. Another players from Jungle will get chance to select engine when all players 8-13 set.
  4. 11^th in table can keep his engine or select any engine different from first 7 in table and different from those 12-13(If player 12-13 wants to use his engine) and those already registered for qualifying tournament. Player 11^th must send email with his will to play qualifying tournament and selected engine till July 10 to ensure registration for qualifying tournament. We send email to all 13 KOE 2007 players with update when new engine registered. Another players from Jungle will get chance to select engine when all players 8-13 set.
  5. 12^th in table can keep his engine or select any engine different from first 7 in table and different from 13^th (If player 13 wants to use his engine) and those already registered for qualifying tournament. Player 12^th must send email with his will to play qualifying tournament and selected engine till July 20 to ensure registration for qualifying tournament. We send email to all 13 KOE 2007 players with update when new engine registered. Another players from Jungle will get chance to select engine when all players 8-13 set.
  6. 13^th can keep his engine or select any engine different from first 7 in table and different from those already registered for qualifying tournament. Player 13^th must send email with his will to play qualifying tournament and selected engine till July 30 to ensure registration for qualifying tournament. We send email to all 13 KOE 2007 players with update when new engine registered. Another players from Jungle will get chance to select engine when all players 8-13 set.
  7. In August 2007 will be posted on KOE Web a list of registered engines/players for KOE 2008 (first 7 from KOE 2007) and all registered engines/players for qualifying tournament. Qualifying tournament will be announced and entry open for any engine different from those registered.
